Even with an injury Lee-Davis’ Hannah Boutwell looked on top of her game.
Boutwell hurt her arm but still won her No. 1 singles and doubles matches as the Confederates defeated visiting Patrick Henry 6-3 on Monday.
“It hurt pretty bad,” Boutwell said. “Plus it kind of has a mental toll you have to get through but obviously I won so it didn’t effect me too bad.”
Boutwell, a senior, took her singles match 8-5 over Anna Taggart and with partner Katy Bitely beat Taggart and Erica Ellermeyer 8-0 in doubles for Lee-Davis, ranked tenth in the DigitalSports Top 10.
Lee-Davis’ Dawn Savage won at No. 2 singles 9-7 against Ellermeyer. Savage trailed 6-2 but then started to return most shots with a lob that turned the tide of the match.
“She just had to changer her game plan,” Lee-Davis coach Rebecca Hendricks said.
The Confederates (5-2) also were victorious in their fifth and sixth singles matches behind Stephanie Burcham and Olivia Davis, respectively.
The ninth-ranked Patriots (6-1) only wins in singles came from Jessica Smith and Danielle Hynson. At No. 3 Smith topped Bitely 8-4 and at No. 4 Hynson beat Kelley Cattoi 8-4.
Smith and Hynson also teamed up to earn Lee-Davis’ only doubles win with an 8-1 victory over Savage and Cattoi.
“We talked well and just get along well,” Hynson said. “We play good together, we’re a good doubles team.”
The loss was Patrick Henry’s first of the season and Hendricks thinks beating a strong team like the Patriots should help her squad.
“We haven’t beat Patrick Henry in a while. It should be a boost for us,” Hendricks said.
