ASHLAND – Deep Run didn’t take long to make up for its loss of the Colonial District regular-season title, winning the district tournament title by 21 shots Monday afternoon at Hanover Country Club.

The best individual scores of the day all came from the Wildcats. Mikey Cantor and Adam Anschultz posted a 75, 4-over par, and Jason Schumacher and Chris O’Neill registered 76s to distance the Wildcats from runner-up Douglas Freeman (323).

Deep Run lost a playoff to Mills Godwin for the district crown last week, and had to win or finish second to have a chance at defending its region title.

“We struggled in a match against Godwin Friday,” Cantor said. “It feels good to come back and get a big win against them. Hopefully we can carry that on to regionals, and hopefully states.”

Cantor, a sophomore, and Anschultz, a senior, tied for the top individual honors and were reluctant to face each in a one-hole playoff.

Cantor took the hole by one shot, after Hermitage’s Thomas Cole beat out Freeman’s Dave Dwight for the last individual region spot.

Now Deep Run and Mills Godwin, Maggie Walker’s Tim Earley (77) and Travis McCall (79), Freeman’s Matt Harman (80) and Zach Carl (80), Patrick Henry’s Trent Thomas (80) and Cole (81) will set their sites on Monday and Tuesday’s region tournament.

Monday takes place at Jefferson/Lakeside, and they finish up Tuesday at Stonehenge.

“I think we’re all going to have to play well,” Anschultz said. “But I’m looking forward to us being in states.”

Player of the year: Jason Park, Mills Godwin
Coach of the year: Tom Hot, Mills Godwin
