Girls Winter Warriors

Do we have enough basketballs for our all-DigitalSports girls basketball team?

We sure do. Led by player of the year Ruthanne Doherty of L.C. Bird, a very humble great player, she’ll make sure everyone stays in line and will set the tone with her defense.

Clogging the paint with her, wow! Deja Middleton of Meadowbrook, Cosby’s Jazmin Pitts and Atlee’s Richelle Price. It doesn’t get any better inside than that foursome.

Price will step out and shoot the 3-ball with her teammate Sydney Henderson, Henderson’s AAU mate and best friend Barbara Sitton of Bird and Mills Godwin’s Maggie Roy.

Meadowbrook PG Crystal Smith will have 20 assists per game with this lineup with many feeds to Deep Run’s Amy Turner, who just knows how to find the basket.

Our do-it-all will be freshman Ka’lia Johnson, who can play anywhere from point guard to center.

Boys Winter Warriors

The all-DigitalSports boys basketball team is chocked full of the top 10 players in the Central Region.

Whatever a coach needs on an elite team, we have it.

Let’s start with the perimeter, led by player of the year Harry Lee Daniel of Highland Springs.

He can fill it up at any point and provides the physicality to set our tone on defense.

Deep balls will rain from Highland Springs’ Harvey Mills, Cosby’s Ben Jessee, Bird’s Rico Ferguson, Deep Run’s Antone Exum and Petersburg’s Terneil Rhodes.

We’ll let JM’s Travis McKie shoot out there as well, he’ll be mad if we stick him inside all game.

We’re strong in the paint, too, with Petersburgs Cadarian Raines, L.C. Bird’s Travis Keels and Prince George’s Andre Williamson.

Hanover over Patrick Henry in Season Opener

Hanover cruised past Patrick Henry in their season opener beating the visiting Patriots 10-2 on Tuesday. 

The Hawks came out swinging the bat well, knocking in a total of six runs in the second and third inning.

But it was Patrick Henry that would start the scoring.

In the second inning, second baseman Chris Beazley hit a single over Hanover first baseman Austin Erb bringing home Jordan Fox to put the Patriots up 1-0.

The Hawks answered back when Laine Denton took home to tie the game at one after Patrick Henry pitcher Kyle Stanley

Hanover grabbed the lead later in the second when left fielder Aaron Adkins stole home after another error by Stanley to put the Hawks up 2-1.

In the third, the Hawks exploded at the plate knocking in four runs to go on top of the Patriots 6-1.

Hanover pitcher Jake Mayers started it when he hit a single to advance catcher Jeb Weymouth to third.

Austin Erb was then walked leaving the bases loaded for Denton.

Denton, with the bases loaded and no outs, brought in two more runs with a single to left field.

The Hawks did not stop there.

Eric Mayers followed with a double to bring home Erb and Sam Hartness would also get a hit to bring home Eric Mayers.

Hanover managed to keep Patrick Henry off the score board in the fourth and fifth inning due to outstanding pitching from Mayers.

“I was able to spot my fastball, my change-up, my curve and tried to keep the ball low…They have some heavy hitters,” Mayers said.  “The energy from my team really helped me out too.”

Hanover was full of energy in the sixth, scoring four more runs to put the game out of reach for Patrick Henry.

PS Advanced Clinics

Position Specifics put on double duty Saturday.

After a rainout of one of the advanced clinics last weekend, PS had two advanced clinics in one day going from 11 a.m. to about 5 p.m.

A six-hour epic worth every minute.

About 30 local student-athletes attended the first version going through defensive and offensive drills.

With the smaller number of attendees came even more individual attention and repetitions for each camper.

Matoaca’s B.J. Morton was a first-timer and loved every bit of it.

“Anytime you have somebody from the NFL helping you out it can’t be anything but good for you,” said Morton, as former NFL’er Kevin Lewis (Varina High defensive line coach) and current Seattle Seahawk Jonathan Lewis handled the linemen. “Plus the guys at Varina run a good program. I really appreciate what they’re doing for us.”

The usual counselor were out in PS founder Chad Blackstock, the aforementioned Lewis brothers and former Virginia Tech star Mike Crawford.

Former UR wide receiver Dan McNair was the newbie, helping out with the receivers and defensive backs like Thomas Dale’s David Williams, who lit up the first clinic and went to the elite camp with the region’s best and stood out there as well.

“I definitely learned a lot of things about DB,” Williams said, “and then we worked on some footwork drills for quarterback. It’s always good to get work in the offseason, especially on a Saturday morning.”

The elite clinic was filmed and DVDs will be created by Pixar and sent out to colleges to publicize our best.

Attendees are by invite only to the second clinic.

Both camps had special guests in University of Richmond players and NFL prospects Tim Hightower (RB) and Arman Shields (WR), who spoke to the campers.

Lee-Davis Wins Opener 5-0 Over Patrick Henry

It was all business for Lee-Davis on Friday night as they defeated Patrick Henry 5-0 at home in their season opener.

The Confederates came out strong in the first inning, jumping on top of the Patriots with a 2-0 lead.

Lee-Davis increased their lead to 3-0 in the third inning when shortstop Casey Clarke stole home after a wild pitch was thrown by Patrick Henry pitcher Lindsey Tingler.

The outstanding defense of the Confederates kept the Patriots off the board as pitcher Kelsie Hudson pitched all seven innings not allowing a single run and only one hit.

Center fielder Charyssa Parent did her job as well, making several incredible diving catches keeping Patrick Henry off the bases.

“Everyone contributed tonight…It was not an individual effort but a team effort,” Hudson said.  “We work really hard in practice and know that not every game will be easy.  We have to work 24/7.”

Going into the sixth inning their was a sense of hope for the Patriots.

Only down three, if Patrick Henry could get a quick three outs they would have a chance to come back.

Their hope was soon crushed as Hudson took the wind out of their sails hitting a single through the gap knocking in first baseman Amanda Parker and third baseman Jana Martin putting the Confederates up 5-0 heading into the seventh inning.

Patrick Henry had one last chance to rally but it would be Hudson again who would stop them.

After walking the first batter, Hudson struck out the second and forced the next two to pop up to end the game for Lee-Davis.

Outlook: Worthington, Kontra and Farrar were all honorable mention all-region last season. The Raiders have strong pitching and defense that should keep them in games. Depth and experience at the varsity level may hurt them.

Outlook: The Blue Devils have all nine starters returning giving them experience all over the field. Bradshaw had a record of 4-2 and a 3.65 ERA last season. Capps (.460, 3 HRs, 18 RBI) is the best bat in the order.

Outlook: Matoaca is inexperienced but got their season started off with a bang with an out of district victory over Cosby. Only two starters are back. Palisano, Kilbourne , Gwaltney and Walker will head the offense attack.

Outlook: The Wildcats have won the district title the past two seasons and were region and state runner-ups last year. Martin, Orlan and Halbeib will try to keep the team as one of the squads to beat in the district and region even with the loss of stars Deck McGuire and Brett Entz.

DOUGLAS FREEMAN
2007 record: 7-7 Colonial, 13-9
Coach: Ken Moore, 26th season
Key players: Will Hudgins, Sr., P/OF; Dustin Galbraith, Sr., P/INF; Stephen Oswald, Sr., LF; Ciaran Maguire, Sr., DH/OF
Outlook: The Rebels beat Deep Run 2-1 in nine innings to begin the season. Hudgins and Galbraith will need to perform on the mound and Oswald and Maguire will need to swing the bats well for the team to claim the district crown. Pitching and speed are the strengths of the team.

MILLS GODWIN
2007 record: 9-4 Colonial,

Coach: John Marano, 17th season, 183-54
Key players: Reed Gragnani, Jr., SS; Robbie Garrett, Sr., P; Kyle Gragnani, Sr., 1B; Travis Lane, Sr., CF; Ryan Ross, Sr., P; Nick Caporale, Sr., P/OF
Outlook: All five pitchers return including Ross, who was injured, and Caporale, a transfer from Deep Run. Garrett is the No. 1 pitcher while Reed and Kyle Gragnani will power the offense. Two sophomores and freshman will start but the team should be solid defensively.

Outlook: Behind Seay, Brewer and Stanley the Patriots should have a strong pitching staff. Their infield play will be a strength but the team is inexperienced in the outfield. Smith (.400) is one of Patrick Henry’s better hitters.

Outlook: Mallory and Sias will lend senior leadership to a team full of junior talent. The Trojans have a lot of offense but pitching may be a question. Finishing first or second in the district might be tough but the third spot is definitely a possibility.

district.


CAPITAL
DISTRICT
ATLEE
2007 record: 6-4 Capital, 11-9
Coach: John Earley, fifth season, 32-49
Key players: Jackie Jenkins, Jr., P/OF; Samantha Kandravi, Sr., P/OF; Krissy Leber, Sr., C/3B; Jessica Hart, Sr., 2B; Ryndee Ruch, Jr., 3B/CF
Outlook: This may be the best squad Earley has had in his five seasons with tremendous pitching depth. Kandravi and Jenkins are an awesome tandem. The defense is always solid. Ruch (.375) and Leber (.353) were consistent at the plate last season. If Earley can find some more clutch hitting throughout the order and gain some wins over togh competition early, look out.

HANOVER
2007
record: 10-0 Capital, 26-2
Coach: Chris Pace, fifth season, 89-17
Key players: Courtney Long, Sr., C/OF; Lisa Puryear, Sr., P/1B; Kelly Stadjuhar, Sr., RF; Amanda Woolard, Jr., CF; Brittany Sutherland, Sr., SS; Jessica Spiegler, Jr., 1B
Outlook: Two-time defending region champions have lost program building blocks in Lauren Brummell (UMBC), Julie Smith (JMU) and Jessie Atkinson (CNU). But a four-year starter remains in Long, who fittingly enough is headed to Longwood. Puryear is good in the circle and is backed up by arguably the top outfield in the area with Stajduhar, Woolard, Allison Worley and Tiffany Browning. Capital is ultra-tough, but Hanover has parts to three-peat.

LEE-DAVIS
Coach: Jackie Davis
2007 record: 8-2 Capital, 15-7
Key players: Casey Clarke, CF; Chelsea Mallory, C; Chelsea “Cheese” Mitchell, SS, Jr.; Melanie Hazlewood, P; Kelsie Hudson, P

Outlook: Great coach, great players and abundant experience equals high expectations for Confederate softball. Clarke is headed to Longwood with Hanover’s Long. Mallory and Mitchell will also be college bound. Pitching is excellent with Hazlewood and Hudson; opponents won’t know who to expect. Sky’s the limit for L-D.

CENTRAL
DISTRICT
COLONIAL HEIGHTS
2007
record: 4-8 Central, 8-12
Coaches: Toni and Chris Martin

Key players: Kari Toombs, Jr., SS; Danielle Searle, Sr., CF; Caitlin Underhill, So., P

Outlook: Eight starters return to the Colonials, including many consistent hitters like Toombs and Searle. The defense behind Underhill is solid and experienced. But CH lacks pitching depth. CH is capable of pulling a few upsets and sneaking near the top of the Central.

THOMAS DALE
2007
record: 11-3 Central, 14-6
Coach: Dennis Jones, third season, 25-13-1

Key players: Lauryn Nanny, Jr., LF; Alexa Tuck, Jr., 3B; Christy Barron, Sr., CF; Sarah Heretick, Sr., C

Outlook: The Knights had an impressive 2007 campaign and have seven starters back. Tuck, Nanny and Barron can swing the bat with the best of them. The key may be freshman pitcher Lacey Waldrop and her defense, as Kelliegh Woodlief graduated. Waldrop had 17 strikeouts in th season-opener.

DINWIDDIE
2007
record: 11-3 Central, 15-6
Coach: Sharon Cousins, sixth season, 57-41

Key players: Kellie Bridgeman, Jr., 1B; Ashley May, Sr., P; Dani Abbey, Sr., OF; McKenzie Witkins, So., OF

Outlook: Four starters are back, including Bridgeman, one of the top hitters in the district and region. She stroked .420 with 31 RBI in 2007. For the Generals to have as successful a season, other bats will have to wake up to support pitcher Ashley May.

MATOACA
2007
record: 7-7 Central, 8-10

Coach: Scott Driskill, fifth season, 23-47

Key players: Tori Benson, Sr., P; Amber Brockwell, Sr., OF; Allyssa Zebrowski, So., SS; Erin Chaney, Jr., 1B

Outlook: The Warriors have solid pitching and a good defense behind Benson. The youthful squad will have to produce more runs to finish third behind Prince George and Thomas Dale.

PRINCE GEORGE
2007 record: 13-1 Central,
17-5
Coach: Pat Waguespack
Key players: Caitlen Manning, Sr., SS; Lauren Vinson, So., P

Outlook: The Royals dominated the district last season and will look to do so again behind JMU-bound Manning. Vinson showed what she can do in the circle last season and should be even better.

COLONIAL DISTRICT
DEEP
RUN
2007 record: 8-4 Colonial, 15-7
Coach: Stu Brown, second season, 15-7
Key players: Taylor Blankenship, Sr., P; Kelly Penny, Sr. 1B; Claire Brooks, Sr., CF; K.J. Johnson, Sr., 2B; Tiffany Tate, Sr., 3B; Jena Baldaino, Jr., RF
Outlook: Seven starters return, including several seniors like Blankenship, the district’s best pitcher and a great hitter. Brooks smacked. 500 last season in limited action. The Wildcats have the making of a district champion.

MILLS GODWIN
2007 record: 9-3 Colonial,
14-8
Coach: Walter Pettus
Key players: Stacy Snellings, Sr.; Lenora Rainey,
Outlook: Terrific catcher Hannah Mills departed, but Pettus and his terrific staff always has a well-coached unit. That won’t change this season.

PATRICK HENRY
2007 record: 11-2 Colonial,
18-7
Coach: Matthew Crowder
Key players: Lindsey Tingler, Utility/P, Sr.; Maggie Hogue, Sr., Inf.
Outlook: Crowder and the Patriots got back into the region discussion the past two seasons, losing out to eventual champ Hanover in consecutive seasons. Their big gun Kami Nuckols has graduated, but good parts are left over.

DOMINION
DISTRICT
COSBY
2007 record: 10-4 Dominion, 15-7
Coach: Ray Jeter, second season, 15-7
Key players: Whitney Haller, Sr., P; Ashley Davenport, Sr., 1B; Brittany Burgess, Sr., RF; Megan Bell-Hill, So., 2B
Outlook: Eight starters are back, led by arguably the most dominant pitcher in the area in Haller. Coach Jeter is still looking for a consistent offense to go with his top pitching. If the bats stay awake we could have a new Dominion District champion.

JAMES RIVER
2007
record: 9-5 Dominion, 13-8
Coach: Rich Johann, second season, 13-8
Key
players: Lauren Trentham, Jr., SS; Katheryn Atkins, Jr., 1B; Lindsey Tuck, So., C; Emelie Duck, Sr., RF; Amanda Belcher, Sr., 2B
Outlook: Youthful but successful pitchers return in sophs Logan Carter and Whitney Catterton. Johann believes the offense has improved and defense can still stop people. Look for Rapid movement up the Dominion ladder.

MIDLOTHIAN
2007 record: 12-2 Dominion,
18-6
Coach: Denise Manuel, 19th season
Key players: Cay Manuel, Jr., SS; Rudy Edmunds, So., C; Mandii Rouse, Jr., 1B; Suzanne Spencer, So., 2B; Krista Townsend, Jr., P
Outlook: Big losses blew holes through Manuel’s roster as the best pitcher in the area, Brittany Blankenship (Wingate), is gone. Her backup, the multi-talented Sammy Dow, will not play this season to concentrate on track and field. Three starters are back, including Manuel’s daughter, Cay. How fast the youthful lineup will grow will determine Midlothian’s season.
