Deep Run has been itching to put two solid rounds of golf together, and did it Tuesday afternoon as the Wildcats won the Central Region tournament by 15 strokes at Stonehenge Golf and Country Club.

James River will advance to the state tournament with the Wildcats, who are already focused on Oct. 19-20 at Waterfront Country Club in Moneta.

“For states, Chris [O’Neill] and I need to play well on the same day,” Deep Run’s Jason Schumacher said. “We always go every other day. He’ll play well one day, and I’ll play well the other day.”

If only everyone can play so well.

O’Neill took the individual crown with a 148, and was the only player to shoot under par in the two-day tournament with his 1-under 70 Tuesday.

Deep Run was tremendously consistent, posting a 309 at Jefferson/Lakeside Country Club Monday and whipping in a 302 at Stonehenge, the top- and fourth-best rounds of the team portion.

Each of Deep Run’s six players had their scores count one day or another.

“It’s what we’ve worked for all year,” O’Neill, a sophomore, said. “We’re really glad to have won and beaten Godwin, especially.”

Godwin finished fourth at 630 behind Monacan, who shot 628.

The Eagles will still send two representatives to the state Group AAA tourney, Colonial District player of the year Jason Park and John Dozier, who were one of the six individual qualifiers.

It was looking as though James River would have to send an individual or two to reach states after trailing Hanover and Monacan after round one. But the comfy, familiar confines of Stonehenge gave them a boost.

The Rapids shot 303 Tuesday, second to Deep Run’s 302 for the lowest team round, to earn their bid, two shots better than Monacan at 626.

“I just wanted to play well for Sean,” Dawson Hobbs said of his senior teammate Sean Doughtery. Both shot 154s. “I just wanted to play well for him and Drew McLean.”
