Maybe St. Christopher’s should move to the Capital or Colonial District.
The Saints registered their third win of the season, dispatching of public-school foe Patrick Henry 68-49 at home Thursday night.
St. Christopher’s has yet to win a game versus their private-school brethren, going 0-8 with five of those games lost by six points or less, including a one-point overtime defeat to Norfolk Academy Tuesday.
But the Saints moved to 3-3 against Richmond’s public schools, knocking off Lee-Davis and Henrico of the Capital District in the Henrico Holiday Hoops tournament in December, and the Colonial’s much-improved Patriots last night.
The win in part came because of a career day from junior Ric Lamkpins. The forward had 21 points and 10 rebounds, going 10 for 15 from the field.
He hadn’t reached double figures in a game all season.
“They were double-teaming and triple-teaming Tom Hart in the post,” Lampkins said of the Saints’ 6-9 center and first option. “So other people needed to step up and that’s what we tried to do today.”
Lampkins didn’t try, he did rise to the occasion.
His knife through the lane gave the Saints a 42-29 lead with 1:20 left in the third period, SC’s largest lead to that point.
All of a sudden, Patrick Henry found some energy, specifically from John Carroll.
He scored on a drive to the basket, hit a nice jumper and followed up a PH miss, scoring all six of his points as the Patriots trailed by five points early in the fourth period.
But the Saints went on an 11-3 run to keep the Patriots at bay, paced by a Lampkins bucket and a coast-to-coast finish by Rob Vozenilek, who had 13 points and four assists for the Saints.
His brother and point guard Alec had nine as the Saints knocked down a ton of free throws in the fourth period to seal the deal.
The Patriots were paced by Marquis Derricott, who put in 14 points on an array of drives and layups. Raquis Morris put in 13.
“We’ve lost a bunch of games that have been really close,” Saints coach Chris Brown said. “I think at this point you get to the fourth quarter … they look over their shoulders a little bit. We’ve played well enough to be pretty successful since the Henrico tournament.”
