Taylor Huber – Dec. 11

Taylor Huber,
Patrick Henry Patriots

Year: Sophomore

Age: 16, Huber just had a birthday Dec. 2

Performance: Huber scored 37 points in a season-opening victory over John Marshall. Then Huber registered 21 points to lead PH over Deep Run in overtime.

On last week:
“I don’t know. I just had a really good game. I was getting a lot of open shots and they were falling for me. My teammates helped me out, gave me the ball.
I don’t know, it was exciting.”

On Deep Run win: “It was amazing. Our chemistry was just so good that game. We were all just really hype and excited about playing them. Our seniors really wanted a chance to win.
We decided that we weren’t going to lose. We just gave it our all and left everything we had on the court.”

Best trait: “I feel like I’m a pretty good leader on the court. I feel like I can see the floor pretty well. I can see the open players and just get the team hype and ready to go.”

Favorite class: “Gym. I’m taking advanced gym [next year].”

On youth: “We have two new freshman, Katie Anderson and Jasmine Smith, they really contribute to the team a lot. The whole team just helped out. This year we only have three seniors, and we have a lot of underclassmen and a bunch of juniors. I think that because we’re young we’ll have better time together. I think it gives us an advantage also.”

Funniest teammates: “I’d have to say Katie Anderson and Gracie Schimitt. Katie is so hyper all the time. She always makes me laugh. Gracie, she’s pretty funny, too.”

Toughest opponent: “I know so many girls on the other teams. I’d have to say Deep Run, Amy Turner. She played me with tough defense. She kept me working. I think she did a good job playing defense on me.”

Invite any three people to dinner:Shaq, my grandma [Annie Lee Stanley, died when Huber was 7] and probably Diana Taurasi. I’ve met her before at one of our tournaments. She came to a tournament at VCU and I got to meet her.” Huber met Taurasi at an AAU tourney. “Right now I play for 3-point Line Sports.”

On coach Leslie Nuckols: “I love coach Nuckols! Pretty much my whole career I’ve had men coaches. To have a woman coach is different, but she knows what she’s talking about. I think her having coached here before helps. She was my gym teacher last year so I got to know her. It’s been fun. I think she will get us far.”

On elevated expectations: “I think we’ll just play the same that we have been. I think people underestimate us a little bit. Even though we’ve had a loss, people still won’t know what hit them.”

Girls basketball, 12/9/08: Godwin slows PH

Patrick Henry’s girls are on their way to the top of the Colonial District.

But Mills Godwin made sure there was no vacancy available for the upstart Patriots Tuesday night, rolling to a 69-54 win at the Eagles’ Nest.

A big part of the reason Godwin, ranked fourth in the latest DigitalSports Top 10, stayed unbeaten was because of Tricia Watkins.

The sophomore forward, who supposedly has a red light on 3-point shots, nailed four treys to go along with her team-high tying 18 points.

Michelle Foley also dropped 18 points, and is more known for deadly marksmanship than Watkins.

But it was Watkins who hit two 3-point bombs in the fourth quarter, one to push the lead to 14 and another to go up 16, keeping the game, No. 9 Patriots at bay.

“I had my stroke tonight,” Watkins said. “When I don’t think about [shooting a 3-pointer] I make it. When I do, I get all tense.

“Hopefully, I’ll get a green light now.”

Godwin put up a red light on PH’s uptempo offense in the first half. The Patriots scored 18 points total to trail by 15 at intermission.

“I thought we played really good halfcourt defense in the first half,” new Godwin coach Mark Seidenberg said. “I think that hurt us the most in the second half.”

Patrick Henry actually tied Godwin in the second half at 36. Most of the damage came from Gracie Schmitt inside. She had 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half.

High-scoring sophomore Taylor Huber and freshman Katie Anderson combined for only 16 points in the contest after having 37- and 30-point games last week, respectively, as PH ran off two straight victories.

Patrick Henry got the lead down to 11 a few times but couldn’t get it to single digits in the fourth period as efforts like Andrea Sisson‘s 12 points and Rachel Nichols‘ season-high 11 were too much for the Patriots.

“I think the girls have learned they have got to have that intensity from the get-go,” former PH star and second-time coach Leslie Nuckols said. “We were definitely getting beat up and down the court.

“Getting down like that, it hurts.”

Patrick Henry 13  5 18 18 – 54
Mills Godwin  21 12 16 20 – 69
PH (2-1 Colonial, 2-1):
Huber 9, Anderson 7, Freeman 4, Smith 6, Schmitt 19, Kenney 2, Winston 5, Morton 2, Brim 0. Totals: 23 6-10 54. 3-point goals: Smith 2.
MG (1-0, 3-0): Geoghegan 3, Henshaw 2, Cole 1, Foley 18, Nichols 11, Teague 0, Chapman 0, Foster 4, Watkins 18, Sisson 12. Totals: 27 10-14 69. 3-point goals: Watkins 4, Sisson.

Week in girls hoops, 12/8

* Raiders Hit Stride: Atlee had a tough first half against Hanover. But the next 10 quarters have been pretty good.

The Raiders took the Midlothian tournament, topping Colonial Heights and downing Capital District mate Highland Springs by 10.

Sydney Henderson, Richelle Price and Britt Hill are on top of their games right now.

If Taylor Henderson, Taylor Ashcraft and others can be consistent, the Raiders will be very tough.

* Dominion Still Ridiculous: L.C. Bird and Monacan jousted as the Skyhawks came out with a 50-46 victory.

It’s only a sign that the Dominion District is still super tough. Cosby has extraordinary talent led by U.Va. commit Jazmin Pitts.

Midlothian, Manchester and Huguenot – with new coach and former Falcons star Bo Jones Jr. – are no slouch, either.

* Capital Not Far Behind: Don’t overlook the Northside’s toughest district.

The Capital has potential with Atlee, Hanover, Henrico and Highland Springs. Atlee is the district favorite, but your guess is as good as mine as to who will finish second.

The trio all have talent, like Hanover with Chelsea Coward (Longwood) back and Kim Browning (UMBC), both Division I signees.

Highland Springs boasts Dashon Ross, a Norfolk State recruit. Kyra Coleman just dropped 27 points and Takeisha Jeffries is a shooter from outside.

Never discount the Warriors’ run-and-gun style, especially since Elaine Derricott is available the whole semester.

* Surprise, Surprise: Patrick Henry is 2-0 heading into a bout with Mills Godwin Tuesday, the Colonial favorite.

Sophomore guard Taylor Huber had 37 points against JM and then 21 in an upset of Deep Run. Katie Anderson led the Patriots in the OT win over the Wildcats with 30 points. Oh, she’s a freshman.

Former PH star and coach Leslie Nuckols has a young, but good team on her hands.

The Eagles, with new coach Mark Seidenberg back on an Eagles basketball sideline, look good early with solid wins over Manchester and Henrico, two top 10 contenders.

* Wave Back: It’s been a few years since Petersburg was a dominant girls team, but they may be on their way back after a narrow, one-point loss to Meadowbrook in the opener.

Coach Robert Claiborne‘s team could be in the mix with Thomas Dale, who has yet to play a game, and the aforementioned Monarchs.

* Private Power: Trinity Episcopal is 3-1 on the young season, falling to Hampton Roads Academy in its own tournament championship.

Jill Brown and Victoria Smith have led the way.

Until next week …
