The Dominion Rules

by Stephen M. Lewis

slewis@digitalsports.com

In February, when bats started making that oh so sweet ping noise and gloves began popping, Cosby was ranked first in the DigitalSports Top 10, James River second.

Things held to form Thursday evening as both of the Dominion District powers won their semifinal baseball matchups to earn that pivotal state Group AAA tournament berth and a Central Region title game appearance.

Before the game, Ronnie Shaban said he didn’t know much about Mills Godwin. He just wanted to get that state tournament berth.

His actions spoke louder than his words as he led off Cosby’s half of the first inning with a home run.

Fired up, the Titans continued their torrid hitting as Bradley Shaban singled to move his brother’s courtesy runner, region 100-meter champion Mitchell Shifflett, to second.

A sacrifice by Dustin Sollars moved the runners, and Tadd Bower‘s grounder was enough to get Shifflett in for a 2-0 advantage.

Jake Lowery then put up an RBI single and Bower scored on a passed ball for a 4-0 advantage.

Many teams usually fold against the Titans after that, but not the youthful Eagles.

Starting four sophomores and a freshman at pitcher in lefty Matt Lees, Godwin responded with back-to-back home runs from Reed Gragnani and Nick Caporale off of the hard-throwing Shaban.

“I thought our kids played well,” Godwin coach John Marano said. “We got some home runs, they got some home runs. It was a tough game in that respect.

“We started four sophomores and a freshman against a bunch of men and we out hit them.”

Godwin had nine hits, and Cosby had eight, but the Titans scored in the fourth off of heads-up base running from football standout Josh Wilburn to go up 5-2.

An error in the top of the fifth allowed Godwin to reduce the advantage to 5-3. Then Caporale drilled a Shaban offering, but Sollars made a great sliding catch in center to end the threat.

Then it was the Ryan Parker Show. He drilled a three-run screamer to left-center field to put Cosby up 8-3.

Then in the top of the sixth, with Eagles sitting on first and second, he nabbed Eric Payne‘s liner to end the threat.

“I don’t know if you saw me in the third-base box,” Marano said. “But I did a 360 [when he caught that ball]. Lucky I didn’t turn my ankle.”

Said Parker: “I barely saw it. I didn’t even know if I caught it or not. It was a shot.”

Now Cosby’s gets its third shot at James River, the defending region and state champion.

The Rapids took down the Patrick Henry Patriots 11-1 led by pitcher Austin Stadler. He climbed the mound and pitched the entire contest, striking out 10 Patriots, scattering six hits.

James River stroked two home runs, one each from Austin McGowan and Eamon Schwartz.

McGowan’s capped a four-run second for the Rapids. Schwartz’s solo shot came in the fourth.

All the while, Daniel Marrs (three hits) was terrific at the plate, and Ian Harvey was all over the base paths with three runs and four RBI.

Though the Rapids had four errors, only one hurt that Ryan Smith took advantage of in the first inning on Jordan Fox’s single. JR’s defense was solid all evening behind Stadler.

“Just trying to play good team baseball,” James River coach Pete Schumacher said. “We know you at least have a fighting chance if you do that. It was fun to watch.”

The third meeting between the Southside teams should be fun to watch as well, with a home state playoff game on the line.

“There’s great baseball in the Dominion District and the Central Region,” Tim Lowery said. “It’s going to be fun and I’m going to soak it in and enjoy every bit of it.”

Wildcats Beat Unbeatens

by Stephen M. Lewis

It had been 38 games since Thomas Dale had lost in either softball or girls soccer, combined.

The streak ended in one night at the hands of Deep Run, as the Wildcats beat the Knights’ softball team 3-0 and the girls soccer squad 3-1 at Thomas Dale.

Softball: Lewis At It Again

Heather Lewis is one of the most humble athletes you’d meet. Almost to a fault she’s shying away from the bright spotlight that comes when you dominate in the circle.

Lewis, a junior, continued her brilliant performance as her defense helped her to a one-hitter to take down the Knights (20-1).

She’s allowed one hit in the past 14 innings.

“We just came out here and we just really wanted to win,” Lewis said. “A lot of people were talking about how they were undefeated and everything. We just really wanted to put a ‘1’ beside their name.”

Deep Run was only able to gather two hits off of TD’s terrific hurler Lacey Waldrop, but took advantage of two Dale errors to advance to Thursday’s region semifinal versus Cosby, a 2-1 winner over defending champion Hanover.

“They wanted to face this young lady but I didn’t want to,” Deep Run coach Stu Brown said, adding he’s happy he won’t have to face her anymore since he’s going to football full-time as the coach of Varina. “We were fortunate to climb on those pitches. That’s how the game works.”

Said Thomas Dale coach Dennis Jones: “That’s probably the best hitting team we’ve faced all year. They didn’t make any errors. They had two hits but they put the ball in play. [Errors] **** you.”

Girls Soccer: 50-50 Ball To Deep Run

Deep Run coach Emily Selbeck didn’t know much about Thomas Dale. So the task for her Wildcats was simple.

“They won every single 50-50 ball,” Selbeck said. “We didn’t know much about this team, which was to our advantage. They didn’t know anything so they came in with an advantage.”

Chaney LaReau got the scoring going for the Wildcats, who will face Cosby, a 3-0 winner over defending region champion Atlee. Her goal gave Deep Run a 1-0 advantage heading into the second half.

“She’s our MVP player,” said Selbeck of the volleyball starter. “What’s incredible is that she’s a freshman.”

Another ninth grader, Emma Newins, was entered at keeper for Chelsea Parker to start the second half. She stood in and made 12 saves, five of impressive fashion.

“She’s probably the best athlete on our team,” said Selbeck of Newins, a standout basketball player for the Wildcats.

Said Deep Run’s Monica Fleisher, who had a goal and an assist: “In the first half we had really great intensity. When we came out in the second half we knew that they were going to come out even tougher because they wanted to get back into the game.”

Baseball/Boys Soccer: Postponed

With Patrick Henry ahead 7-4 on Thomas Dale, the heavens opened and lightning hit, postponing the contest until Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Thomas Dale.

Boys soccer never got off the ground. As the introductions were blasting from the PA, the same storm hit the stadium 200 yards away from the baseball field.

That game is set for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Thomas Dale.

Not Nipped This Time

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

If at first you don’t succeed, do like Deep Run’s girls did.

After losing by a slim margin last season in indoor and outdoor track, the Wildcats won the Central Region indoor meet three months ago, and added the outdoor crown to it Thursday evening at Sports Backers Stadium.

Several ladies did damage for the Colonial District stalwart, led by N.C. State-bound Ashley Orr.

She earned field event performer of the meet honors on the strength of her long jump title (19-3 1/4) that she won by over a foot.

She placed third in the triple jump (36-10).

Briana Hudson (high jump, 5-5) and the 3,200-meter relay squad also took crowns to help the Wildcats nip Manchester and Desiree Russell by 1.5 points.

Russell, a sophomore, earned the runner-of-the-year award.

She won the 100-meter dash crown over Deep Run’s Joanna Hassell and her 200 win over Henrico’s Empress Harrison.

She helped the Lancers to a third-place finish in the 400 relay, but Orr and Hassell ran the third and fourth leg to put Deep Run second in that event, which could have been the difference.

Manchester’s Stephanie Brown put on a dominating performance in the 100 hurdles, winning by nearly a second to lead the Lancers.

Prince George and 400 champ Amber Pierson finished third, only a half point over Midlothian and 800 winner Paige Johnston.

Rebels Track Dominates

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

The boys track banners at Douglas Freeman hadn’t been touched much, if at all, when it came to region competition.

It’ll have fingerprints all over it soon as the Rebels won the Central Region outdoor track title to couple it with their indoor track title won in February, its first in school history.

Thursday’s championship wasn’t a first, but it was the first since DF did a double in 1997-98.

At the head of the effort were two seniors, Michael Quash and Ulrick Smith (pronounced U-Rick, the l is silent).

They both shared the runner-of-the-year award with blazing performances.

Quash won the 110-meter hurdles and followed with a blistering 37.89 in the 300 hurdles, becoming only the third person to ever go under 38 seconds.

He also finished second to Smith in the 200.

Smith won the 400 easily (48.88) and ran a blistering 48-second split for the winning 1,600 relay squad to put polish on Freeman’s trophy.

Second was Lee-Davis with 60 points, 33 behind Freeman, led by field event performer of the meet Antonio Puller.

Puller, headed to Averett to play basketball, won the triple jump (46-2, tied career best), finished fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump a day before his birthday.

Cosby and the terrific Mitchell Shifflett (100 champ, third in 200, anchor of winning 400 relay) finished third with 57 points.

Deep Run was a close fourth with 56 led by Wednesday’s pole vault winner Matthew Armentrout.

Midlothian’s Jason Witt turned in an outstanding performance, setting the 1,600 region record by over three seconds and taking 800 in a tight race with Lee-Davis’ Robert Reynolds.
