DR’s Lewis Hurls No-No

by Stephen M. Lewis

Now this is the Deep Run softball team everyone was expecting to see.

After an 11-1 start and jumping as high as No. 2 in the DigitalSports Top 10, Deep Run fell into a swoon of sorts, going 4-5 and dropping to third in the Colonial District.

What looked like a foregone conclusion became a fight as Deep Run had to win the district tournament to achieve a region bid after regular-season champion fell to Patrick Henry.

That’s just what it did. The Wildcats, paced by a no-hitter from Heather Lewis, toppled the red-hot Patriots 11-0 at RF&P Park Wednesday night, avenging a 7-3 loss to PH a week ago.

Lewis did a brilliant job mixing up her pitches and speeds, keeping PH (9-11) off-balance.

“Coaches are big on superstitions and I can’t stand superstitions,” Deep Run coach Stu Brown said. “I do things different just to make everybody else mad. So I was going to talk about [the no-hitter] to get under everyone else’s skin, but I said, ‘Naw, I’m going to go with the flow.’ Went with it and she threw a no-no.”

Said Lewis, who had seven strikeouts, “It feels really, really good, but I definitely couldn’t have done it without my defense.”

The first was a clean inning for both, but Deep Run got dirty in the second.

Leadoff Erin Anderson walked and pinch-runner Joanna Callaway replaced her on the bases. The Wildcats (17-6) moved her over to third.

Brooke Blankenship (2 for 3, 2 RBI, 2 runs, SB) then drilled a single to bring in Callaway for all Deep Run would need. But the Wildcats would take more. Much more.

Next at-bat was Jena Baldaino (2 for 2, RBI, run), who singled to bring in Blankenship, but was tagged out trying to stretch to second to put Deep Run in the dugout.

PH was sat down in order again, highlighted by a nice play at first base from Kelly Penny. In Deep Run’s half, Taylor Blankenship (2 for 4, RBI, run) smacked in Kelly Foate for a 3-0 advantage.

Three innings later, Deep Run put eight runs on the board to secure the victory as the Patriots just couldn’t get the hot-hitting Wildcats off the plate.

“That’s what’s happened to us all season,” Patrick Henry coach Matt Crowder said. “One thing starts going south and we have a hard time stopping it.

“We started six seniors today. We’ve got some work to do.”

PS Performance Clinic

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

You hear it all of the time when referring to a promising, young company, but it is true in Position Specifics’ case.

It’s getting better and better.

Over 100 campers came out to the first annual Performance Clinic at SCOR near Virginia Union University.

Even more schools were represented.

George Wythe made a big apperance in numbers. Mills Godwin came out. Highland Springs, Varina and Douglas Freeman are the usuals.

The counselors were top-notch as well. Former Virginia Tech star Mike Crawford, Virginia Hornets coach Clifford “Perk” Jefferson and PS’ Chad Blackstock and Kevin Lewis shared their expertise.

They added in some youthful football minds in former Varina stars Davon Morgan (Virginia Tech) and Alan-Michael Cash (N.C. State), and former Highland Springs standout Jim Davis (Virginia Tech, headed to Canadian Football League).

There was a new vet, too, in Eddie Handsome, the newly minted assistant at Varina.

“I think it is an awesome opportunity for the kids because I know myself growing up I never had a professional athlete or a college athlete come back and give me advice about anything,” said Davis, who spent two seasons with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. “I think it is important for us to come out and get into the community, be seen, let them know that they are loved and we are behind them.”

College is in front of a lot of them, and though some coaches that confirmed couldn’t make it out, a few did from the Division II and III level.

Basketball Decisions

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond
slewis@digitalsports.com

Several standout basketball players have made their college decisions recently.

Harvey Mills, Highland Springs’ standout point guard and an all-DigitalSports pick, is headed to Virginia State to play for coach Tony Collins.

Mills, a four-year varsity player who stepped into the starting point guard spot seamlessly, averaged 11 points per game as Highland Springs dropped only two games all season. Mills dropped a 3.97 grade-point average on the Nile Mile Road school.

“Because of his uncanny ability to shoot the basketball, his experience as a player and his tremendous work ethic, Harvey will prove to be a valued recruiting gem for Virginia State and head coach Tony Collins,” Highland Springs coach George Lancaster said.

* L.C. Bird forward Travis Keels is headed to Division II power Augusta State in Georgia.

The 6-7 Keels, an all-DigitalSports selection, averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks and was the Dominion District player of the year.

* Former Douglas Freeman standout Ahyaro Phillips, who just finished up a postgraduate year at Fork Union, cast his lot with Nevada.

He had offers from several schools, including perennial Big South champion Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.

* Petersburg big man John Holleman is going to Walter State Community College.

* Dinwiddie’s high-scoring Deonte Lewis will play for Hartford Community College in Maryland.

* Adam Desgain of J.R. Tucker will head north to Randolph-Macon to play for coach Mike Rhoades. Desgain poured in 22.5 points per game, best in the Central Region.

* After spending a couple of years at Allegheny Community College, former Matoaca star Calvin Lee earned a scholarship to Towson.

* Former Henrico star Tray Okoth, the Central Region player of the year in 2006, is going to Carson Newman. He had been playing at Cleveland State Community College.

Several girls have made their decisions.

* L.C. Bird’s Bianca Vaughan will join the CIAA and play for St. Augustine’s.

The sharpshooter threw in six points per game for the Central Region champs, including a season-high 17 points against Meadowbrook with they were top-ranked in the DigitalSports Top 10.

* Patrick Henry’s Jontee Lindsey is headed to Claftin University in South Carolina.

* Rischelle Carter of Varina has picked Clinton Junior College in South Carolina. So has Meadowbrook’s Jessica Arnold.
