PH takes showdown

A playoff game in the first week of October?

Patrick Henry coach Ray Long didn’t care what month it was. He made sure his troops knew the visit to Douglas Freeman Friday night was all about the Division 5 playoffs.

His Patriots responded with a huge 40-6 win over the Rebels chocked full of big plays.

“We made it a playoff game,” PH coach Ray Long said. “If we want to play in Division 5 we had to win it.”

The Patriots, tied for eighth in the latest FOX/DigitalSports Top 10, came out with urgency, putting the contest away early to give

The first score took four plays, keyed by a 61-yard jolt by QB Brandon Cash. Jamison Kenney scored from six yards out and Hayden Dyer added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Then Vincent Derricott ended Freeman’s promising drive with an interception. PH responded with a 12-play, 96-yard drive closed by Adrian Cavanaugh’s 11-yard TD reception from Cash.

Freeman drove again into PH territory, but stalled on downs. On PH’s first play after, Cash hit Kenney on a shovel pass and Kenney ran for a 71-yard score. PH 21-0.

The big-play bonanza wasn’t over as Will Woodworth intercepted Freeman and took it back 80 yards for another score. Barely 15 minutes had passed and PH had a 27-0 lead.

The lead eventually ballooned to 40-0 on a Brandon Wong interception return for TD and a Cavanaugh 15-yard scamper.

Cash was outstanding, rushing for 130 yards on just four totes. He was 5 for 8 from the pocket for 186 yards and two more TDs.

Freeman’s receivers put up nice numbers. Andrew Mauck registered five catches for 112 yards, and the lightning-quick Monty Smalley caught seven balls for 83 yards and scored Freeman’s TD in the fourth quarter.
